Poirier | Mix For Sinden

May 27th, 2009 Stu

The first thing I thought when I read Ghislain Poirier’s latest email missive was ‘Oh, I see Ghis has a new haircut’. Yup, I’m that shallow.

What I should have thought was ‘Nice! A tidy mix from Sinden’s Kiss show with cuts from Ghis, Major Lazer, Alison Hinds and Emvee thrown into the soup. Must post that.”  From end to end, the mix focuses almost exclusively on Poirier’s own soca productions, alongside Canadian affliates Bonjay and Skinny Fabulous from St Vincent & The Grenadines.  It’s a high BPM breezy romp, bringing a little sunshine to our darker times.

Whilst were talking face value, Ghis has dropped the Ghis and now trades as Poirier. Just so we’re clear.

Jonny Faith | Beat Research

April 17th, 2009 Stu

CB31137D-A401-4169-9336-3F512854DD65.jpg

Jonny Faith and I share the same pilgrim heritage – decamping from the horizontal rain, biting winds and dumb midgies of Scotland to Australia, to the city of Sydney (one of the most misunderstood cities in the world). Thus ensconced down under, Faith has been a regular frontrunner in promoting bass culture on Sydney’s streets, as club DJ, promoter (of Headroom) and radio presenter (‘For The Heads‘ on 2SER), the latter two with his regular cohort Monk Fly.

This new mix hauls the likes of Flyamsam, Bullion, Kelpe, Fulgeance and fellow Scots Architeq and Hudson Mohwake (via Heralds Of Change) into a low-end stew, originally broadcast on the legendary Solid Steel radio.

Sydneysiders should check the Headroom Facebook group for info on the next Headroom dematerialisation.

Dizz1 | RBMA Mix

January 25th, 2009 Stu

71C45874-7E5C-4037-B7EE-B7F6CA079B5A.jpg

More local product from out of Australia:

Dizz1 has been a player in the Australian music scene for a long while, as turntablist, promoter, producer, drummer and teacher. He’s been part of known Australian hip hop / beats projects such as db Chills, Wicked Beat Sound System, Nubreed, The Shook Daily Crew, Budspells and The Lordz of the Fly, and more recently has stacked up an impressive list of new creative partnerships: Mark Pritchard, Steve Spacek, Bobby Singh and Om’Mas Keith (SA-RA Creative Partners), all of which will be dropping releases in the coming twelve months. And lest we forget the not-so-insignifcant matter of Dizz1’s signing to Stereotyp’s Crunchtime Records as ‘Mugsy’.

More immediately is a world tour with DJ Dexter (formerly of The Avalanches) under the name “Curse The Machines” – citing artists such as Flying Lotus, Caspa, Hudson Mohawke and Harmonic 313 as kindred spirits, the Curse project “blends world music with Bass music” and hits Europe and the U.S. in the coming months. Sydneysiders get a chance to catch them supporting Dorian Concept at Hermans (Space Is The Place) on Valentine’s Day.

On this mix for the Red Bull radio series (following his participation at the Barcelona RB Academy in 2008), Dizz1 flexes his fingers to showcase the skills that have kept him at the heart of the South Pacific beats and bass scene for so very long, featuring cuts from a variety of his collaborators and conspirators.

Lone | Naomixxx

January 21st, 2009 Stu

‘Superficiality is everything’ – that’s a mantra I hear a great many times these days. In a world of blipverts, unlimited free availabiity of music and micro gen-Y attention spans, the days of long, languid periods of pre-coital courting with musicians appear to be gone. First impressions count, and a bad first impression counts double. So here it is – my superficial confession: Lone’s album cover reminds me of bad, Euro-Minstry-of-Sunshine-electro-house music marketing, misogynistic blokes thinking that lipgloss, titties and babes will help sell their opportunistic, piss-poor music.

Exhibit A:

httppivotcmail4comtyldrkieyhklkrjrir4440a611-e106-4257-a818-4dcb8a0774e7.jpg

Case for the prosecution over, here’s the case for the defence: underneath that misdirecting cover is a gorgeous album, where Boards Of Canada fall into a passionate, groping roll in the hay with Flying Lotus and the ever-mutating Wonky genre. Full-length cuts meld with brief snapshots and textures, combining to produce an album dripping with warmth and promise – so much so, that it might well be time to reappraise that album cover after all.

This new mix from Lone pulls an almost unrivaled list of players into the light: Plaid, Kode 9, The Tuss, Rustie, Clark and more.

Lone – Naomixxx | zshare

1 – kona triangle – pinchbeck intro
2 – lone – indigo breath
3 – plaid – anything
4 – kode9 vs LD – 2 bad
5 – the tuss – fredugolon6
6 – rustie – response
7 – drexciya – triangular hydrogen strain
8 – macabre unit – lift off
9 – clark – for wolves crew
10 – MRK1 – get out clause
11 – jakes and joker – 3k lane
12 – mr. curtamos – glow in the dark step

Spoek Mathambo | H.I.V.I.P. Dezemba Liazonz Mix

January 11th, 2009 Stu

A5B7215B-30E0-4ECA-A819-C2FF093CBCDD.jpg

There’s a grand debate that rages around the blogverse: that it takes Euro-focussed filthy electro hip hop or a verse from M.I.A. or, in the case of Vampire Weekend or El Guincho, afro-beat & other ‘tropical’ sounds refracted through the lens of skinny white kids, for most Westerners to engage with African music. This is not a new debate: traditional ‘world music’ has often faced similar charge – that ‘vehicles’ such as Peter Gabriel or Sting, or generally hapless branding exercises, are required in order for anyone north-west of the contintent to start to engage and take notice.

Whilst my experience of running Fat Planet tends to suggest otherwise (or was at least an exception that proves the rule), it’s certainly a given that only the truly hipster fringes of new African music receive the most media space, and there’s a great deal that’s left unsaid (start with CIAfrica, Nomadic Wax, 9ice, Damo Do Bling amongst others).

That’s not to say that those initial examples are not without merit, far from it in many cases. If we were to dismiss the blogverse’s contribution to the promotion of African music as being too hipster-inclined, we may well have missed Esau Mwamwaya or the growth of Kuduro. The accusation rather, which does stand up to interrogation, is that blog engagement is generally shallow and transient. That’s the sad side of the story, that whilst we celebrate the volume of blog posts of new African sounds, we despair about the lack of depth or ongoing commitment. When I blogged about this at the cessation of Fat Planet, some commentators suggested that ‘light posts are better than no posts’, but it feels that an intermediate position is the most realistic – a position I’ve been attempting to undertake on Discontent.

And so to Spoek Mathambo. As one half of Sweat X, Soweto’s Spoek (aka Nthato Mokgata) has been a constant blog presence over the last 12-18 months, turning blog heads onto electro and hip hop South African sounds. Whether it’s his work with Playdoe (with Sibot), Bulgarian or DJ Edjotronic (with a new 12″ on Boyz Noize dropping soon), Spoek’s name repeatedly resurfaces – of late, in the form of his own ongoing mix series. This latest mix practically opens and closes with work from England’s seminal Cabaret Voltaire, however sandwiched in between are what Spoek defines as “South Afrikan tech, kwaito and UK funky”.

Lukid | FACTMix

December 1st, 2008 Stu

D4E4DBED-74E7-4BA7-B0B6-BAAF16828836.jpg

Amongst the forthcoming onslaught of end-of-year lists (and after the blizzard of throaty rock magazine lists that have already appeared on Stereogum), I’m hoping for a few new categories, some new thoughts, new foundation principles. I might even start a few on my own, such as ‘Best Label That I Didn’t Think I Knew Very Well Until I Realised I Owned Most Of Their Back Catalogue’. This award, this week, goes to Werk Discs.

Way back in the midst of whenever, I spent a lot of time writing about Sweden’s Stacs Of Stamina, and even more time beating listeners over the head with them on the Fat Planet radio show. Their 2005 Werk album ‘Tivoli’ (feat. Earz and TTC) is still a masterstroke, and the pinnacle, of the came-and-went made-up genre of Eurocrunk. Werk also threw out the delicious ‘Grim Dubs’ series, featuring Atki2 and his alias Monkey Steak, the glorious digi-dub album ‘Foundation Bit’ from Disrupt, Lukid’s ‘Now EP’ featuring a clattering, wonky refix from Hudson Mohawke and the ravetastic retrovisionary recent drop from Zomby, ‘Where Were U In 92?’. Stellar, each and all, I’m breathless just typing the list. And after all that, there’s the not-insignificant matter of the new release from label boss Darren Cunningham, aka Actress, titled ‘Hazyville’.

But it’s to London kid Lukid we (re)turn, celebrating the release of his second album ‘Foma’ – promoted with a smart mix for FACT magazine and the admission that he’s been “listening to these [album] tracks for so long now that I don’t know if they are good or not anymore”. If this mix is anything to go by, they’re a smart bet for the next Award I decide to make up.

Lukid – FACTMix | Sendspace Download

1. Samoyed – Fuck
2. Autechre – Drane
3. Actress – Redit 124
4. Fluent – Crazy
5. Ssuave – Scotty’s Pikachu Beat
6. James Pants – She’s Out of My Life (Dub)
7. Jana Hunter – The New Sane Scramble
8. Agape – Rejoice
9. Orchestre PolyRhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey – Minsato Le, Mi Dayihome
10. Panda Bear – Young Prayer
11. Lukid – Untitled
12. Theo Parrish – Love Triumphant
13. Fuzz Face – Brainswapper
14. Dabrye – Get Dirty (Instrumental)
15. Dorian Concept – Chocolate Milk

16. Lukid – Chord

FACT Magazine today posted their “20 Best Mixes for 2008″ featuring Mike (Italians Do It Better) Simonetti, Generation Bass, Prins Thomas, Dj/Rupture, Hyperdub, Esau Myanwaya & Radioclit, Optimo (with their mighty ‘Sleepwalk’ mixtape) and Metro Area. Taking out the top spot is Appleblim’s podcast for Rinse FM back in April, with the Skull Disco boss bringing together a mix of two halves: Part Two devoted to the outer fringes of dubstep (including Ramadanman, T++ and more), with the introductory half of the equation serving as a personal dig through his dusty crates. Says FACT: “This mix feels like a mate sharing his favourite tunes: classic Chain Reaction techno (Resilient’s ‘1.2’), The Beach Boys’ cosmic masterpiece ‘Feel Flows’, Mr Finger’s ’87 house classic ‘Stars’ and the fluttering, languid psychedelia of Alice Coltrane’s ‘Journey in Satchinanda’.”

Dusk & Blackdown | Keysound Radio ‘08

November 13th, 2008 Stu

2126149745_c5acd85057.jpg

This podcast mix for XLR8R from London production duo Dusk & Blackdown dropped many months ago, but it’s ripe for re-appraisal. I say this primarily as the album which it promotes – ‘Margins Music’ – is a unique document that pinpoints all that is compelling about music in 2008. Yet, it still remains largely (although not exclusively) uncommented by the blogeratti.

Blackdown (aka Martin Clark) knows his dubstep – he is, after all, Pitchfork’s resident advisor on the subject. His 2008 review, now up at Pitchfork, presents us with a distinctly grey picture. In reference to his closing remarks at the end of 2007 (“Anthem bashing was endemic, with sections of the scene competing in harder-than-thou production contests”), he says this for the last 11 months:

“If anything dubstep was worse, as a percentage whole, in this department in 2008. Anthem bashing, cloned derivative productions, reduced experimentation, constrained diversity, and distorted wobble tracks became more endemic. In truth, if this path continues to be the major part of the scene in the future, the genre will burn itself out or turn itself musically and culturally irrelevant in less time than it took to incubate in the dark Croydon shadows. The leaders, fans and advocates of this style will have the blood on their hands of a once vital and unique genre that had been and had the potential to continue to be truly different and original. They will have to live with that shame.”

He’s been blogging about the scene from both a promotional and philosophical standpoint for a number of years, and thus has unique understanding of what the scene requires to push it forward. When his track ‘Lata’ dropped back in 2006 (coupled with a Burial remix of ‘Crackle Blues’), it fast become worn out on my turntable – a beautiful slice of downtempo, percussive dub with a vocal from legendary Hindi singer Lata Mangeshkar delicately woven over the top. It was a spectacular exercise in ‘beauty through minimalism’ and a shock to the dubstep system.

Thankfully, lessons were obviously learned from the production, as ‘Margins Music’ is awash with sounds and vocals that represent the true cultural diversity of its birthplace, London Town. It is, in truth, a concept album, a documentary of the capital in 2008, with contributions from Pakistani singer Farrah and Punjabi vocalist Teji, rolling Bhangra dhols, tabla and sitar all competing with innovative electronic production and grime verses spat by Trim and Durty Goodz. In short, it’s a breathtaking ride.

If you remain unconvinced, use this mix – full of unreleased cuts – as a precursor to your main fix (Buy @ Boomkat):
